In August 1851 fifteen yachts competed in the waters around the Isle of Wight, giving rise to the oldest sporting trophy in the world: The 100 Guinea Cup. From 1870 the trophy changed its name and began to be called the America's Cup, in honor of the schooner America which won the first edition.
In October 2024, the waters of Barcelona will host the 37th edition of the America's Cup, which will see the reigning champions of Emirates New Zealand challenge the winners of the Challenger Selection Series.
